Hello beautiful people,
Is it just me, or do late summers and nostalgia go hand in hand? Maybe it’s the memories of the week before school would start again. A new uniform, the smell of sharpened pencils, and a Lisa Frank trapper keeper full of fresh intentions, this time around.
I still hold on to those intentions each time I start something new, and this time is no different.
Except, it is a bit different. This time I know just a tiny bit more about how creative beginnings usually go. There is almost always a period right before you dive into “the work” that falls somewhere between procrastination and inspiration. I won’t try to blend those words, but I think you know what I mean.
During this time I do things like refreshing the studio and taking time to get my tools, techniques and mindscape “just so.”
What kind of colors am I gravitating towards? Sage. Sky blue. A certain lilac. Pink?!
What kind of strokes or marks are feeling good to make? Very expressive ones.
What kind of sounds do I feel like listening to? Classical.
What about surfaces and sizes? Raw canvas. The bigger the better.
How do you want to feel when you make this stuff? Free.
Those are the kinds of questions that come up during the calm before the creative storm.
And this time, as I find myself on the precipice of jumping into a new body of work once again, my fresh intention is to make the creative process more free, joyful and natural. Let’s see what happens!
x Jess
